Sports Briefs 10/15

Football

On Homecoming Weekend, the Ichabods destroyed the MSSU Tigers, defeating them 63-7. The first quarter wasn’t too bad for the Tigers, ending with them behind 14-7. Then Washburn proceeded to score 21 points in each of the following two quarters and added another in the final quarter. The Ichabod’s routing of MSSU was the largest Homecoming win in Washburn’s history. The team’s next game will be played on Oct. 20 against the University of Central Oklahoma.

Tennis

Concluding the season for tennis, the duos of Paul Haase/Alejandro Valarezo and Logan Morrissey/Alexis Czapinsky both took third in the ITA National Cup. Both teams won their first match, lost their second and then won their third place matches. The men’s team also played against Kansas Wesleyan last week. They beat the Coyotes 6-1. Everyone will return to action in February.

Volleyball

The volleyball team defeated MSSU 3-1, winning the first two matches and the fourth match. Then, their undefeated run came to a bitter end against Northwest Missouri State. The Ichabods couldn’t manage to win a single set against the Bearcats, ending their winning streak at 22 wins. With the loss, Washburn falls to No. 11. Their next opponent will be the Fort Hays State Tigers on Oct. 19.

Cross Country

After placing eighth in their last contest, Jacob Klemz was named the MIAA Athlete of the Week. This is the third time he has earned this distinction this season.

Golf

The golf team placed 10th at the Blue Tiger Invite. This contest marks the end of their season. They will begin play again in the spring. Also, a new indoor driving range has been opened, allowing for golf practice during the winter.

Soccer

The Ichabods spent most of the day behind against Northeastern State. However, they were able to score late in the game and send it into overtime. Nobody could score in overtime and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Unfortunately, the Ichabods struggled in their next match against Central Oklahoma, in which they lost 1-7. Their next contest will be against UCM on Oct. 19.
