TOPEKA- Greg Mortenson, author of “Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace… One School at a Time,” will make an appearance on the Washburn University campus Nov. 20. In his honor, the Washburn Student Government Association is organizing a Pennies for Peace campaign. Pennies for Peace is a program Mortenson started when he first began his project of building schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The program emphasizes the impact of how one penny can impact the education of these students. For example, one penny equals one pencil. WSGA’s goal is to raise $12,000, which is how much it takes to build one school. Pennies for Peace jars have been placed in 24 locations around the Washburn campus (listed below). Donations to Pennies for Peace also may be made the night of the Mortenson event on Nov. 20. As part of the iRead program at Washburn University, Mortenson, will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20 in White Concert Hall, Garvey Fine Arts Center, Washburn campus. Advance tickets (which are free) are required and may be picked up in the Center for undergraduate studies and programs office located in room 122, Morgan Hall, or the student activities and Greek life office located on the lower level of Memorial Union.
