The Washburn Lady Blues volleyball team finished its weekend at the Oredigger Classic on top, winning two more matches Saturday with a pair of sweeps in Golden, Colo.

The Washburn ladies began the day with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-21) victory against Mesa State.

The evening match was also a success as the Lady Blues topped Fort Lewis 3-0.

Washburn went 4-0 in their first tournament of the season and defensive specialist/librero Molly Smith was named to the All-Tournament Team, joining seven others.

While MIAA play doesn’t begin until Sept. 16, coach Chris Herron said in an interview with WIBW 580’s Bruce Steinbrock that the games the Lady Blues were starting off the season with were still big in building a good nonconference record.

“All of the games this weekend and next weekend count as regional matches so they’re very important to us,” said Herron.

Herron also said that while he didn’t want to say too many good things and sort of jinx the team, he was happy with how things were going so far.

“Through the first tournament, I’ve been very pleased with a lot of the things the team is doing. We’ve done well in most phases of the game.”

The Lady Blues have another volleyball tournament next Friday and Saturday in the Texas Womans’ University Volleyball Tournament in Denton, Texas. Washburn will face East Central, Texas Woman’s, Texas A&M-Kingsvillle and Southwestern Oklahoma State in the two days of play.
