Zach Watkins leads East team to Cactus Bowl all-star victory

Zach Watkins performed well in the East-West Cactus Bowl, accumulating a team-high seven tackles and leading the West squad to a 16-0 victory. The East squad was limited to 121 total yards with 34 on the ground and 87 through the air accounting for 11 first downs.

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Washburn Ichabod senior linebacker Zach Watkins helped lead the West All-Star team to a 16-0 win over the East squad at the 2010 Valero Cactus Bowl at Javelina Stadium Friday night (Jan. 8) host by Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Watkins, who was voted one one of the West captains, finished the game with a team-high seven tackles and was also slated to handle long-snapping duties on special teams. He also recorded a tackle on special teams on kickoff coverage. The East squad was limited to 121 total yards with 34 on the ground and 87 through the air accounting for 11 first downs.

Watkins, who finished his career with a school record 470 total tackles was named the joined Trey Lewis (2006) as the only Ichabods to receive the league’s top defensive honor. Watkins led the MIAA in tackles with 108 and a 9.8 tackles per game average was also named to the MIAA’s first team defensive unit for the third time in his career.

Watkins was a three-time first team all-MIAA pick at Washburn and earned AFCA All-Amierican honors and second team Daktronics all-American honors.
