The Lady Blues and Washburn Ichabods had a clean sweep of Wednesday night’s games against the Gorillas.

Playing tit for tat, the Lady Blues battled the Gorillas of Pittsburg State University. The Blues and Gorillas traded the lead several times, with Pittsburg State using an 11-1 run to earn their biggest lead of the night at 36-28. Midway into the second half, the Lady Blues pulled ahead for good thanks to nine straight points by Stevi Schultz, a Washburn junior guard. After her two three-pointers and three free throws, WU maintained a solid lead through the end, finishing at 65-57.

Cassie Lombardino led the Blues with 20 points and nine rebounds, followed by Schultz’s 14 points and a strong effort by sophomore guard Laura Kinderknecht with 10 points. Senior forward Alyssa Mullen grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, the most by a Lady Blue since Crystal Walker’s 16 rebounds against Emporia State in 2002.

The Ichabods had much the same story against PSU, spending much of the first half playing catch up to the Gorillas. They left the court at halftime trailing 28-29, but came back ready for the second half. De’Andre Washington, a senior forward, lead the team with his first double-double of the season with 23 points and 14 rebounds, followed closely by fellow senior forward Logan Stutz with 21 points. Jeff Reid, a freshman guard, scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half to help lead the Bods to a comeback victory. The combined effort led to a breakaway not long into the second half that lasted the rest of the game. The Ichabods left the court with a final score of 82-66.

Washburn’s basketball teams may have won the fight for their wins, but will have a short-lived celebration as they prepare to take on the Emporia State Hornets in the Turnpike Tussle this Saturday. The Blues will be televised, beginning at 1:08 p.m., on Cox 22 as part of MIAA TV as they take on the defending national champions. The Ichabods will tip off at 3:30 p.m.
