Two Topeka Police Officers Killed in Dillons Shooting; Suspect Shot by Officers Shortly After

AJ Dome, Washburn Review

Two Topeka police officers were killed Sunday night in a shooting at the Dillons on 1400 SW Huntoon St. Early Monday morning, the suspect in the shooting was gunned down by officers at his residence.

The first shooting occurred around 6:09 p.m. in the parking lot of the Dillons supermarket. The two officers, 50-year old David Gogian and 29-year old Jeff Atherly, responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle sitting in the parking lot. The silver Toyota Camry had three occupants inside; the suspect, 22-year old David Tiscareno was in the back seat. As they approached the vehicle, Tiscareno opened fire on the officers. A third officer who has not been identified responded to the calls for backup, and was not injured.

Gogian and Atherly died in the hospital later that night of gunshot wounds to the head. At 10 p.m., police chief Ron Miller held a press conference, where he identified the main suspect in the shooting as Tiscareno.

Tiscareno was killed by officers shortly before 6 a.m. when he exited his residence, 306 SW Western. Officers tried to reach Tiscareno via loudspeaker and telephone. At one point, officers deployed gas canisters, as noted by two loud booming sounds. Upon exiting the residence, Tiscareno brandished a handgun and fired a random shot. Three officers from two different agencies returned fire, mortally wounding Tiscareno. Tiscareno had a lengthy criminal history, mostly with violent offenses. The other two occupants of the vehicle were taken to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning, and have not been charged.

Funerals for Gogian and Atherly will take place on Saturday, Dec. 22 at the Kansas Expocentre. According to the Topeka Capitol-Journal, there will be standing room for at least 1,000 people, but many more are predicted to attend.

The Dillons grocery story where the shooting took place has since reopened, and a uniformed guard is stationed full-time at the store.
