Scorch on the Porch took place 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Memorial Union.

It’s Homecoming week at Washburn University and the festivities are plentiful. Every day of the week from Oct. 24 to 28 chock-full of events and opportunities for university spirit. This year’s theme, The Magical World of Washburn, is all about welcoming back our alumni and showcasing our student pride.

Scorch on the Porch is a lunch event that takes place regularly and generally keeps up with whatever is happening on campus.

“We have a [Scorch on the Porch] event every month,” said Gabbi Rollins, Event Coordinator for the Memorial Union. “This month’s theme is Homecoming and we have t-shirts, music and food to help bring the spirit. Next month’s theme will be about the election and sort of who’s gonna win it and all of that.”

Students were encouraged to purchase t-shirts starting at just $3, as well as taking advantage of a $5 meal deal with brauts, cookies drinks and more on offer. Hundreds of students and faculty came through to enjoy the event and partake in the celebration.

“I love this gig. This is the second time we’ve played [Scorch on the Porch]. You guys make it simple and people seem to really enjoy the music,” said Joe Davenport, vocals and guitar for the folk rock band The Ragged Few. “I feel like there’s a good community here. Lots of people seem really friendly and they seem like they stop and talk to each other. So it’s a really nice gig for us to play.”

As well as entertaining the picnicking crowd, The Ragged Few garnered quite a bit of student interest in their t-shirts and LP and said they’ll be recording their first full album in the near future.

“Sometimes you can get on a college campus and people just walk by. And [here] people almost always stop by and just ask and talk,” said Davenport. “So we really like that a lot.”

Some seemed worried by the weather, after it had rained the night before, leaving the grass soggy. Yet somehow, the clouds opened up at just the right time, revealing the sun to give the event its name and heat things up a good amount for late October.

The event, while not unique to Washburn’s Homecoming week, marks the halfway point between the Homecoming Ball on the evening of Oct. 24 and the Homecoming Parade at 10 a.m. Oct. 29.

Other events during the Homecoming week include the student organization pride event Yell Like Hell Oct. 27 in Lee Arena and the Bonfire Pep Rally at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28 on the practice field Southwest of Yager Stadium.

It all culminates in the Ichabod football game against the Missouri Western State University Griffons at 1 p.m. Oct. 29 at Yager Stadium, where the Homecoming King and Queen will be announced at halftime.
