On Saturday, Feb. 21, Aleshire Center organized the Washburn leadership challenge event training at Kansas room of Memorial union. Around 30 people participate in this training.
Jaxon Blubaugh, sophomore secondary history education major and Washburn leader challengement fellow, explained about the main role of training.
“So this training is to make sure that all of our volunteers feel prepared and are able, that they can do the job that they’ve been assigned for the Washburn leadership challenge met next week,” Blubaugh said.
Blubaugh also described the leadership qualities that he wants to see in the participants develop after this training.
“Really the big ones that I look forward to because I’m a little partial to them, is teamwork and collaboration and communication,” Blubaugh said. “Those are the two that I feel like I’m really looking for or looking for the participants to kind of grow in.”
Emma Ludlum, junior English literature major and student office worker at Aleshire center, explained the primary objective of the Washburn leadership challenge.
“So WLCE’s main goal is to give students experience with leadership situations and make them feel more comfortable in their ability to perform in those situations,” said Ludlum. “One of its biggest focuses is promoting collaboration within leadership roles. So that ties into the Aleshire center’s goal of promoting students’ experience with leadership and pursuing leadership roles in their life and engaging with their community.”
Ludlum described what activities they have added in this training to make it engaging.
“So we try to make sure that all the information we’re giving them isn’t overwhelming, we try to make sure we give them the right amount and in ways that make sense, that way they’re getting the educational experience without kind of zoning out because it’s too much,” Ludlum said. “And we also try to make sure, like, for example, we will see in a bit there will be a small quiz for if people remember everything we’ve told them and this year we’re doing it in the form of a Kahoot to make it a little more fun for people.”
The Washburn Leadership Challenge Event is in its 16th year and has grown significantly since launching in 2011. WLCE day one orientation is scheduled for Feb. 26. More information is available on the program’s website.
