On Oct. 23, the We Are F1rst organization hosted its Halloween Bash meeting in Morgan 202 from 4-5 p.m. This meeting included a variety of games, pizza, lemonades, creative costumes and giveaways.
The president of the club, Nayely Salas, senior exercise and rehabilitation science major, described the purpose of the meeting.
“At this event, we’re gonna have some games and hold some opportunities for people to win prizes such as candy and just have fun time,” Salas said.
Salas mentioned that the We Are F1rst organization aims to create a community for first-generation students and hosts various events, including leadership, volunteering and social gatherings.
“At our meetings, we typically just try to keep our main core at building community, so we make friends, but we also try to do some sub-goals, such as leadership events or volunteering or parties, to just get to know other people,” Salas said.
Alexandra Venegas-Flores, junior psychology major and one of the event organizers, spoke about the Halloween Bash meeting as an annual gathering designed for first-generation students to celebrate Halloween and foster a sense of community.
“Every year we throw a little party just to celebrate Halloween and give students a break. I definitely love all the fun games that we put together. We have the Halloween bowling and the ring toss game,” Venegas-Flores said.
Venegas-Flores shared that the organization also engages in various activities throughout the year, such as community service projects like making care kits for cancer patients and leadership-building activities, to foster a sense of unity and support among first-generation students.
Mackenzie Burns, freshman biology major, who participated in the meeting appreciates the turnout, the opportunity to socialize and the food, which she finds enjoyable after a stressful week.
“It’s really fun. I like how many people showed up because, after a stressful week, it helps a lot. I like that, we get free food, and you get to socialize with a lot of people that you don’t know, and just dress up and have fun,” Burns said.
People were dressed in their most creative costumes, embracing the event’s spirit. Some transformed into spooky ghosts and witches, while others dressed up as whimsical characters, adding a playful flair to the occasion.
This meeting was not just a break from the daily grind, but a much-needed escape into a realm of recreation and camaraderie. With every ring tossed and every pin knocked over, the Ichabods created unforgettable memories, reminding everyone how important it is to take a break and enjoy the lighter side of life together.
