Yager Stadium was packed with excited football fans, who were ready to see the Washburn Ichabods take on the Colorado School of Mines Saturday, Sep. 14.
Students, like Keaton Remp, senior psychology major, and Miqueas Mazo, junior history major, made sure that their support for their Ichabod team, along with their Ichabod spirit, was loud and clear. But when the final second of the game went out, the Orediggers beat the Ichabods, 31-28.
“We were yelling, we were screaming, we were cheering on, filled with school spirit. We couldn’t pull it off in the end, it just came down to one kick. But you know, that didn’t stop us from giving all the school spirit we could, and we gave everything, but it was still a fun game to watch,” Remp said.
Although Washburn wasn’t able to win the game, Mazo still enjoyed attending.
“The outcome of the game made me very sad, but the build-up to the game was outstanding. It was incredible. We were out here on the East Lawn and we were just having a blast tailgating as such. I know I’m going to be here next week for the next game, tailgating,” Mazo said.
Players from the Ichabods’ football team, like Tre Richardson, sophomore nursing major, and Caeden Spencer, senior health and fitness promotion major, discussed how the game could have gone better and showed determination on preparing for the next game.
“We will limit the little mistakes we had, and we played way better than week one, so I can’t complain,” Richardson said.
“So our main focus was just getting better from week one to week two, so we just took that time, took advantage of it to get better, to work on our execution, offense and defense, and that showed here in week two. And for next week, we are just going to keep doing our same things. Obviously, we got to clean up some things, but for the most part, we are just sticking to our game plan and playing hard,” Spencer said.
Even though the outcome of the game wasn’t the outcome that the Ichabods wanted, Washburn still had a great time playing the game, watching the game and celebrating the game with their Ichabod spirit.
