Washburn University is increasing its opportunities by adding a women’s golf team and recruiting seven women to be a part of this new experience.
Washburn continues to add new opportunities for its current and future students. Sports have brought people together for centuries and have opened doors for so many individuals, especially at this institution.
“So, golf is one of those things that you can never perfect, and every day it’s a little different,” said Lois Deeter, a sophomore marketing major. “It’s not like any team sport, because it’s all on yourself, so all the pressure is on you.”
Golf is more than a sport to these women. It’s a passion. It is not only an opportunity for them, but also something they enjoy and take pride in.
Although they all love golf, they each have a different story and reason for their passion for the sport. Allie Sullivan, a sophomore business major from Peoria, Arizona, explained that she got into playing golf because of her father.
“My dad got me into it when I was super young, and I just started playing more and more,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan and Deeter both have a unique story behind their decision to come to Washburn University on a golf scholarship. Golf also played a role in this decision for Aliyah North, a sophomore biology major.
North came to Washburn after playing golf for a year at Fort Hays State University. She decided to come to Washburn because she wanted to come back to her hometown.
“Coming back home seemed like it’d be good for me,” North said. “My brother played basketball here at Washburn, so getting to come back and play golf here was like a dream come true.”
Each one of these women had similar emotions regarding their expectations for this season. They all used the same words: hard work, positive, and excited. These three girls, and the rest of the team, prepare to play in five tournaments this fall followed by five more in the spring.
