Chemistry professor under fire after accusations of cultural appropriation
Holly O’Neil, associate professor of chemistry and interim assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, is under fire after being accused of practicing cultural appropriation Thursday, Oct. 27.
Cultural appropriation is defined as “the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect this culture,” according to the Cambridge Dictionary.
During the English Department’s fourth annual Halloween party, O’Neil went dressed as pop star Michael Jackson. She performed a dance to Michael Jackson’s song, “Thriller.” A video of the performance was posted onto Facebook, then quickly deleted.
There has been much confusion on the true context of the incident, but Washburn University is currently investigating the situation.
The Review has contacted several sources connected to the matter and has not received any extra details.
Lori Hutchinson, interim director of public relations, did reach out through an email. Here is what she had to say:
“Washburn University is reviewing concerns raised about a costume worn by an employee to an on-campus Halloween party Thursday, Oct. 27. We are gathering information and hearing perspectives from the students, faculty and staff who were involved and have been affected before developing a response to the situation. Washburn’s commitment to an inclusive campus community will be an important part of this review process.
Individuals who have information, questions or concerns may contact Dr. Teresa Clounch, Associate Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students at [email protected].”
The Review will continue to report on this incident as more information is released. Check washburnreview.org for additional updates.

This is stupid, it’s HALLOWEEN!!!
KansasMan • Nov 5, 2022 at 1:01 am
That’s why I always wear a Klan hood for Halloween. It’s already racist so I can’t be accused of being extra racist!

Great report Aja Carter. It is admirable that you reported on this controversial issue in a professional way. Its important that we seek and report the truth even when it may be upsetting to some. Great work, I would love to see where this ends up.

I am so glad to see the responses so far! She clearly was dressing up as Jackson’s version of a Zombie. I also noticed hos one sided the reporting was. One person throwing stones, and the good professor not allowed to respond, or anyone else for that matter. It was a Halloween party, Thriller ,Halloween party, Thriller ,Halloween party, Thriller ,Halloween party, Thriller ,Halloween party, Thriller !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We at the Review have reached out to all parties involved to get every angle of this story. Nothing we have published so far is false or unverifiable.
Our only job is to seek out the truth and report it. I am only responding here because of the accusations of unfair reporting, which are simply not true.

Yah but the publishing of this article is completely premature and has now lead other news outlets to smear her name without knowing the facts. This is national news now and she’s being accused of wearing blackface by our very own wibw. Y’all should be ashamed of yourself. This should keep you up at night.

We cannot control the actions of other news entities. We have done nothing but publish verifiable facts regarding this matter and will continue to do so as they become available to us. Washburn University deemed this matter worthy of investigation, and that is the story we are pursuing. We have no intent to libel anyone and have not done so.

If your only job was to seek the truth you would have waited until you got the truth. Instead you’ve allowed people to drag this woman’s name through the mud.
Justin Shepard • Nov 5, 2022 at 11:33 am
Everything we have published so far has been verified and is true. Washburn University launched an investigation, and we reported on said investigation. We do not libel here.
If you feel we have printed anything that is untrue, please point it out to us so we can look into it and rectify the situation.

I can only think this is poor reporting. There must be something more – I fail to see the issue with a costume and a dance. Where are the details as to what was so offensive? Perhaps I miss read, but all I see is that she dressed as Michael Jackson and did the Thriller dance. Was it really just that she dressed as someone of another race? Really???
Justin Shepard • Nov 5, 2022 at 11:32 am
We reported on an investigation that was already in progress because it was relevant to our campus. We do not invent news, but we will report on it as it occurs.

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of costumes available that don’t require the wearer to portray a different race. It boggles my mind to think people find that ok.
Alexander T Zinni • Nov 4, 2022 at 2:49 pm
It boggles my mind that wearing a Michael Jackson costume is off limits to anyone. So I can only wear costumes of people that are the same race as me? So, if I’m Asian, I can only play an Asian on Halloween (the holiday in which the whole intention is to be someone else)? You want to get mad about the MJ costume, get mad because he was a pedophile.
Why shouldn’t I wear a costume of someone from a different race? If I’m not Japanese, I can’t be a ninja. If I’m not white, I can’t pretend to be Joe Biden? That whole premise is ridiculous and makes no sense because there is not anything about it that is inherently offensive. How is this in any way offensive? Should I not buy a Michael Jackson costume because I’m not black? Isn’t that, at it’s core, racist? Not allowing me to do something because of my race?????

To impersonate MJ blackface is not necessary. What is sad is the fact that in 2022 people don’t get why this is wrong. Educate yourselves on the origin of blackface and if you still don’t get it that is a YOU problem.
J • Nov 4, 2022 at 1:41 pm
But MJ himself did not have s “BLACK FACE” via expensive and very deliberate efforts. He was whiter than most Caucasian people.
R Henderson • Nov 2, 2022 at 11:29 am
To impersonate MJ black face is not necessary. The fact that in 2022 people don’t understand how and why this is offensive is ignorant. Do your research people and if you still don’t get it that’s a you problem.
Alexander T Zinni • Nov 4, 2022 at 2:53 pm
I don’t see “blackface” anywhere in the article. I did see the video where she looked like the zombie version of Michael Jackson.
Na • Nov 5, 2022 at 7:36 am
OMG what is wrong with the world today. It all going to He..!! It freaking Halloween be what you want. All this race crap is stupid. This need to stop NOW! You all going to get someone fired and ruin that person life over some stupid stuff.
Kelsey • Nov 1, 2022 at 6:10 pm
Give me a break. Halloween is about pretending, not appropriating. If pretending to be Michael Jackson is appropriation, then every dude wearing a dress is doing the same to women. Where’s the outrage for this?
Shane Adamson • Nov 1, 2022 at 3:39 pm
This is absurd!! Especially in this context!
Doug • Nov 1, 2022 at 9:29 am
Unbelievable. When will BS like this stop. This young lady was putting on a Halloween show as asked by WU higher ups. Just when you think you have a University in the 21st century it drops back to 19th. Come on Washburn get serious.
Crystal • Oct 30, 2022 at 7:30 pm
What a bunch of Karens! To think that letting loose and having fun at a Halloween PARTY would make headlines as a bad thing. It’s not like she was giving lectures dressed as Micheal. If you are one of the people who were offended by this, you should be ashamed of yourself. I know misery loves company but this is ridiculous.
Dan Hay • Oct 29, 2022 at 3:25 pm
Are you serious. We have gone so far in the other direction that things are totally ridiculous. It is not like she did it to make fun of or ridicule a culture or race.
Jay • Oct 29, 2022 at 10:49 am
Kind of ashamed to be an alumni since Washburn spends so much time virtue signaling and sacrificing staff to the gods of woke.
