Healthy habits for the summer

Kendra Wicks

Summer break is a time for celebration, laughter, friends and food. There are adventures to be had and memories to be made. Your health allows you to enjoy those moments, so make sure you take care of yourself and those around you.

Warm weather invites everyone into the sunshine. While a little sunlight is good for your body, too much can be harmful. Skincancer.org recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and applying enough to fill a shot glass. Be sure to reapply every few hours. When possible, use hats and clothing to protect your skin.

Applying bug spray can help prevent mosquito bites, and wearing clothing that covers you arms and legs will protect you from bug bites as well. These small creatures are typically more active during the cool hours of the morning or evening. Be aware of the diseases that mosquitoes and other insects carry in your area. If you spend time near fields of tall grass, be sure to check for ticks that may have hitched a ride.

Clothing may help prevent bites and burns, but it won’t do much to fend off heat stroke. In some cases, wearing loose, breathable clothing will be necessary. Stay in the shade as much as possible, take breaks if you are exercising in the heat, and always be sure to drink plenty of water.

If you plan to travel far from home over summer break, visit your doctor before you leave, carry a small first aid kit and pack smart for your trip. Even if you’re traveling somewhere warm, don’t neglect to bring at least one outfit for colder weather and vice versa.

Summer is the party season, so be sure to party smart. Be cautious of drugs and alcohol- these substances can heavily damage your body and leave you with health consequences that last for years. Use the buddy system when you go out. Don’t let intoxicated friends or strangers leave alone with people they don’t know, and look out for the people around you.

With summer just around the corner, people are making plans to go on adventures, participate in outdoor activities and hang out with friends. The summer months are great for getting involved in these events, but it’s important to stay safe and healthy in the meantime.
