The 16th Race Against Breast Cancer Annual 5K Walk/Run is just around the corner. This year, Washburn University School of Law will be the starting point for participants. Last year there were 246 race finishers. This year, there are more than 1,000 individuals who plan on participating.

The race will be 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29. Registration for the race will start at 7 a.m. Cost for participating in the race is $25 for an individual participant and $55 for a family of three, plus $7 for any additional person included in a family. Proceeds go directly toward funding the mammography services that the RABC Corporation provides in Shawnee, Douglas, Jackson, Jefferson, Osage, Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee counties.

The RABC is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to providing screenings to all women who otherwise would not be able to afford mammograms. More than 300 women each year receive assistance from the corporation. It also reaches others through fundraising events.

All age groups are encouraged to participate. The event will provide food, music, a fitness warm-up, a pre-race dove release and a pre-race balloon launch. It will also feature cancer survivors and community leaders. Any cancer survivors participating in the race will receive a complimentary gift.

On top of participating in a good cause, there will be cash and other prizes. The top three overall runners will receive $100 for first, $75 dollars for second and $50 dollars for third place. The top three runners who are 50 or older may also receive $75 each. Other age groups that will receive special awards for the top three runners range from 12 and younger to 65 and older.
