Mondays at the Mabee hub for intellectual discussion
February 18, 2008
Mondays at the Mabee is a new activity that started this semester as an opportunity for interaction outside of a structured classroom setting. Donna LaLonde, dean of university honors programs, and Alan Bearman, interim dean of libraries, started it as a way to get students, faculty and staff who would not normally chat a chance to have discussions.
“We were looking for a way to bring students into the library and also create a culture of general academic and intellectual conversation,” said Bearman.
Dannah Hartley, academic advisor, said that although Mondays at the Mabee is scheduled for two hours it is not set up like a normal meeting.
“A lot of students that have class come in for fifteen minutes just to stop in,” said Hartley.
With topics ranging from presidential politics to a poetry presentation and how to survive finals, Mondays at the Mabee is for any student to drop in for a great discussion and have some lunch.
“It’s a nice exchange of ideas,” said Hartley. “It has two benefits: feed your stomach and your mind.”
Mondays at the Mabee is held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the back corner of the upper level of the library.
