Henry’s Grill puts Harley’s and “Hog” together in more ways than one
October 6, 2010
Together with barbecue, and the classic rock n’ roll on the overhead speakers, Henry’s Grill has the perfect recipe for a truly American meal.
Two years ago, Ray Moorhead became owner of Henry’s Grill, located inside the Topeka Harley Davidson dealership at 2047 S.W. Topeka Blvd. after working there for 13 years. He revamped the menu to his own satisfaction and kept it mostly the same, changed the recipes and made them better.
Black Dog Barbecue, which Moorhead and his wife created six years ago, is the catering and carry-out part of Henry’s Grill. When Moorhead bought Henry’s Grill he just combined his catering business with the restaurant, and kept the original names for both.
The barbecue sauce, which Moorhead makes himself, is available on all the tables so you can load up on as much as you want. Made fresh daily, brisket, pulled pork, and turkey, are all on the menu, as well as beer beans, slaw and their famous Cheez n’ Tators.
Tuesday and Wednesdays they feature burnt ends from 11 a.m. until they run out. Friday and Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. they have baby back ribs, available until they are gone.
“[The ribs] usually sell out Friday by 11:45,” said Jeff Lowe, Moorhead’s son-in-law who helps manage Henry’s Grill. “Saturday depends on when people come in, but they always sell out.”
If you are up early on a Saturday, Henry’s Grill also serves breakfast from 9 to 10:30 a.m. They offer bacon and cheese omelets, toast, biscuits and gravy, waffles and sausage. For a two-egg omelet with bacon and cheese, the cost is $1.99, and $.55 for a sausage patty, one can have breakfast for less than $3. The prices would likely fit most college students’ budgets and there is an additional 10 percent student discount on a nimber one combo meal.
Henry’s grill offers combo meals on their menu, a number one that comes with a sandwich of your choice, one side dish, a pickle and a soda. If you are a little more hungry than that, they have a number two that includes two side dishes, so you can have the Cheez n’ Tators and the beer beans. Customers can also order al a carte if you choose.
The restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., in conjunction with the Topeka Harley Davidson dealership schedule. They are closed on Sunday and Monday.
“[They] have great food and their prices are really reasonable,” said Megan Sholtz, junior biology major at Washburn. “I like that it has a sit-down environment but it’s fast enough to eat on a lunch break or in-between classes.”
