It could have been easy for the Kansas Koyotes to take their opponents lightly Saturday night. After one quarter, they proved that wouldn’t be the case.

Kansas (4-6) scored 28 first quarter points and didn’t let up as they rolled over the Kansas City Matadors 75-6 at Landon Arena. Kansas City had been outscored 194-6 in their two previous games versus American Professional Football League teams. The win clinches the Koyotes’ a spot in the APFL playoffs.

“Our first goal [of the season] was making the playoffs and we achieved that,” said Troy Biladeau, Kansas head coach. “We started 0-3 and if you saw some of our first couple games, you might not think we’d make the playoffs. So, I’m proud of the guys. We fought.”

Kansas received a solid offensive effort from their receivers, as Mike Williams, Naji Shinski, Josh Lauer and Nick Gawden all hawled in at least one touchdown reception. Williams and Skinskia paced the Koyotes as they collected three and two touchdown receptions, respectively.

Following a loss last week to Sioux City, starting quarterback Carlos Kelly bounced back for Kansas, completing 10 of 13 passes for 93 yards and five touchdowns. Backup quarterback Cory Dipman also received playing time, completing 4 of 4 passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns.

The Koyotes scored their first touchdown of the contest following their recovering of an onside kick that opened the game. Shinskia gathered in a pass in the corner of the endzone and kicker John Cox added the extra point to give Kansas a 7-0 lead. The Koyotes would continue their offensive onslaught throughout the half, as they lead 43-6 at halftime.

Even with a subpar opponent and a relatively easy victory, Biladeau felt like the game still provided good experience for his team. Kansas plays its final game of the regular season against the Iowa Blackhawks on Saturday. Iowa defeated Kansas 41-28 when the two teams tangled on May 14.

“I think the guys are feeling good right now,” Biladeau said. “It’ll be nice to have a good test going into the playoffs. So, actually it sets up perfect to play a team like this and then having one more tough game before the playoffs.”
