This year’s crop of fantasy running backs is indeed talented, with the top five ranked picks by Yahoo! all being running backs. While you would indeed do well snagging most of these players (Chris Johnson is still a big question mark since he has yet to show up to practice with the Titans because of his contract). However, there are some good values outside of a first round pick.

Peyton Hillis:Last year’s fantasy darling at running back has proven to be incredibly consistent. Though his output fell off toward the end of the year, mainly because of nagging injuries, he appears to be healthy and ready to get the bulk of rushes, catches and touchdowns for the Cleveland Browns this yeason. He should fall between a second and fourth round pick, depending on the size of your league. Just hope that the Madden curse doesn’t knock this break this workhorse’s legs the way it has in the past.

Mike Tolbert: The “backup” running back in San Diego is actually a great late round pick. He took over the reigns last season after Ryan Matthews was injured and is still their goal line back. He has looked strong in the preseason and should be more of a receiving option, as well.

Fred Jackson:This time last year, Fred Jackson was part of a three-headed running back monster that, despite looking good on paper, was quite ineffective. After Marshawn Lynch was traded to Seattle, Fred Jackson took over and returned to his dominant form. Look for more of the same this season in Buffalo.

Ahmad Bradshaw:Great pick. Despite the fact he rushed for two more touchdowns last season, you can typically expect to get the N.Y. Giants’ running back about nine picks later than St. Louis’ Steven Jackson, making him a value pickup.in the third round.
