‘Chernoblyl Diaries’ Movie Review

In Hollywood’s most recent horror film, Chernobyl Diaries, Director Bradley Parker (known for his work in: Let Me In, We Own the Night and Fight Club), gives one of America’s most tragic accidents in history a new deadly twist.

Historically, this film is loosely based the 1986 Chernobyl Disaster located in the Ukraine, where an explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, killing thousands within weeks due to such strong exposure.

The film, Chernobyl Diaries, is the story of six friends (two brothers, one’s fiancé and friend, as well as an additional couple) who, as tourists, hire an extreme tour guide who promises them a once in a lifetime experience in the abandoned city of Pripyat, the former home to the workers and families of those who once inhabited Chernobyl. Although , any location uninhabited by human civilization will be taken back by nature and what nature holds is a story no one quite expects.

Chernobyl Diaries is an effective dark film straight out of any horror genre fan’s dreams. However, in my opinion, due to the vast amount of cliché’s held in the horror film genre, I found the scare factor in this film to be almost nonexistent. Why? As an avid movie goer myself, and a huge fan of horror films, I found the consistency of choices and actions made by the main characters to be extremely predictable, therefore almost depleting my chances of becoming scared.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Visually, I found the film to be an excellent tale of misfortune. The storyline between the characters was very well played out. The history behind the film also kept me extremely interested. I assure you, any fan of the horror genre will surely enjoy this film.

The only question I really have for you is do you want to know the secret to Chernobyl? Would you be brave enough to travel there and find out for yourself? If not, the answer awaits in the Chernobyl Diaries.
