Margaret Wood was announced as the new director of the Center for Teaching Excellence and Learning. Wood has taught at Washburn University since 2002. She was promoted to associate professor and tenured in 2008.

In addition to her service to Washburn, Wood has worked at the University of Denver, Syracuse University, the Denver Public Library, the National Park Service and has served as an intern at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Her academic training includes a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of Michigan as well as Masters and doctorate degrees in anthropology from Syracuse University. She has been honored as a Fellow in the Center for Kansas Studies and is an active member of the Kansas Historic Sites Board of Review and Kansas Anthropological Association.

Wood has received numerous grants from various sources including the United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service and Wenner Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research. Her publications have appeared in prestigious journals including The International Journal of Historical Archaeology and Historical Archaeology. She has contributed chapters to several edited volumes published by the University Presses of Colorado, Alabama and Utah.

Wood will begin serving as director Jan,13. Her C-TEL office will be located in Suite 200 of BTAC (the VPAA area). In addition to her duties as director she will continue as a valued teaching faculty member in the department of anthropology/sociology, an area which features many of the C-TEL pillars, particularly diversity and high impact learning. She also has served on Washburn’s Assessment Committee, addressing issues crucial to a third C-TEL pillar.
