Washburn Tech’s Recycled Rides is both giving and getting a lift this spring. The program is giving a refurbished vehicle to a family in need at 9 a.m., Friday, May 9, on the Washburn Tech campus at 5724 S.W. Huntoon St. At the same time, State Farm Insurance will present another major donation to the program through the Washburn University Foundation.

The 2010 black Ford Focus will be the eighth vehicle given by Washburn Tech, while State Farm’s donation marks the second time in less than a year that the company has supported the program.

“State Farm is known for being a good neighbor, and that shows in their dedication to the community and Recycled Rides,” said Clark Coco, dean of Washburn Tech. “It is incredible to hand a family the keys to a better future. State Farm’s generous donations are making that possible.”

Recycled Rides partners auto students with instructors and professional mentors in the community to refurbish vehicles and give them to individuals or families in need. Local businesses and individuals also donate money, parts and supplies to get the vehicles running again. Washburn Tech plans to give a ninth recycled ride in June.

Washburn Tech was the first school in the nation to participate in the National Auto Body Council’s Recycled Rides program. The ride-away event in May is being held in conjunction with another spring tradition, the Washburn Tech Car Show and BBQ.
