On Monday, Feb. 10, Washburn Black Student Union held its regular meeting at Plass Learning Resource Center from 7 – 8:30 p.m.
Cinai Anderson, sophomore exploratory major, offered some suggestions for connecting with WBSU outside of its regular meetings.
“We do different types of volunteer work, like car washes, and we do our blood drives that’s during the summer and then we also have one during Halloween,” Anderson said. “ We also are planning to go talk to high schools for career fairs and things like that.
Destiny Savannah, freshman social work major, mentioned that she discovered WBSU during orientation and shared an update on its activities.
“I just made a lot of friends and stuff like that, which is what I originally joined for,” Savannah said. “We should do more field trips and things like that. I know we went on a couple already, but I feel there could be a lot more.”
DeMarques Hinds, sophomore business management major, has been a WBSU member since the beginning of his freshman year. He also highlighted the positive impact WBSU is having on campus.
“It’s bringing people together,” Hinds said. “It’s a good networking place. We just build a lot of leaders there and our leaders just spread out among different organizations. [WBSU] brought up a sense of leadership out of myself.”
Anderson also mentioned that BSU has organized a series of events to celebrate Black History Month. The Black Excellence Ball will be held Feb. 21, and the Poetry Slam will be held Feb. 25.
