The French Club arranged a meeting Wednesday, Feb. 5, to create Valentine’s Day cards.
The tradition originated in France, which gave the club the opportunity to explore and learn not only the French language but also the French culture.
“I think the French language is often associated with terms of endearment and love,” said Courtney Sullivan, professor of French. “People love things in French, it makes it seem more romantic and sweeter. So we came up with a fundraiser idea. We’d done this fundraiser in the past and it had worked pretty well. It also offered an opportunity to see a different side of students, highlighting their crafting skills and enthusiasm.”
The meeting created a relaxing environment for the club members by listening to French love songs and crafting letters as well as learning French love quotes.
“I have been a member for a year and a half and everyone is very kind, and even if you don’t speak French super well, you can still come and have a great time,” said Maria Tardiff, senior English major.
These activities were planned collaboratively, offering students a rich cultural and educational experience.
They meet every other Wednesday and do activities with the French language.
“Students who are studying French, or like the French language can come to the meeting. We go to Nelson Atkins and French restaurants or watch a movie recommended by students,” said Helene Perriguey-Keene, lecturer of French and Spanish.
The club welcomes all the students who want to learn French. The Valentine’s Day cards are on sale at the Union Feb. 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
