Cold weather is a challenge for students, staff and faculty as classes resume after winter break. The struggle against the cold is becoming the daily routine for many as they navigate campus.
Mercy McDermott, sophomore nursing major, has shared her personal experience of how she deals with the cold and the steps she takes to protect herself from it.
“I just layer my clothes, maybe my scarf. I just wrap it around my neck so it’s kind of like a mask, keeping the wind from hitting my face. Wearing gloves along with hot drinks helps to stay warm and manage from the cold,” McDermott said.
Freezing temperatures bring illnesses like the cold and flu. Staying healthy is another challenge that students face during the winter months. Ensuring proper nutrition, staying hydrated and getting enough rest can help students to stay active and free from winter illness. Eating a balanced diet, drinking warm liquids like soups and eating lots of vegetables, herbs and spices like garlic and nutmeg can also help to deal with sickness.
Allison Montague, senior health service administration major, shared how she deals with cold and stays comfortable in winter.
“I stay home more often during cold weather. [I seek] out warm and cozy spots to study. I usually enjoy hot coffee during winter. I also prefer working out, it’s a great way to stay warm and boost energy,” Montague said.
Winter not only affects the health but also the social life of students. During the cold, students prefer to stay indoors, making it harder to meet up with friends or participate in outdoor activities. Group study sessions, movie nights and meeting up in cafes can help students to socialize and be motivated during cold days.
Winter can make student life difficult but dressing warmly, staying active and socializing indoors can help students stay warm, healthy and focused. With the right mindset and preparation, students can overcome the cold and continue to succeed in their studies.
