The Washburn Cricket Club played a match against Avila University Nov. 15 at Yager Stadium.
Organizing the game took a lot of effort, with both teams eager to showcase their talents and foster community spirit. The match was closely contested, but Avila managed to secure the win in the end.
Washburn batted first and scored 100 runs in 16 overs. Nima Lama and Aman Kashyap were the top scorers with 17 runs each. Avila chased the target and scored 101 runs in 13.2 overs, winning by three wickets. Even though Washburn lost, their players showed great effort and teamwork.
“The match went well. It was a good experience overall to be able to have a cricket match at a Yager Stadium for the first time ever in the history of Washburn,” said Mohammad Asfaque, president of the Washburn Cricket Club “It was a very proud moment for us. We’ve been playing cricket for two years now, but it was our first time playing at Yager.”
The game featured strong performances from Washburn’s players, particularly in batting and bowling. However, a few missed catches and fielding mistakes gave Avila the edge. Team captain, Amit Kashyap, acknowledged these moments while praising both teams for their efforts.
“I really want to congratulate our players and the players from Avila University,” Kashyap said. “It was a great match. Just a couple of catches and some fielding mistakes cost us the game. Apart from that, we played really well. Cheers to my players—they batted well, bowled well, and gave it their all. We’ll work on our fielding for the next game. Cheers to everyone!”
Despite the loss, the Washburn Cricket Club is determined to use this experience to grow and improve. Saugat Simkhadka, vice president, expressed his pride in the team’s efforts.
“Though we lost against Avila, I couldn’t be prouder of the way our team performed. The effort, dedication and heart all showed on the field. Wins and losses are part of the game, but what truly matters is how we play, and [they] gave it [their] all.”
The match was a testament to the team’s passion and teamwork, leaving the Washburn community proud and eager for the next game.
