On Nov. 7 the National Association for Music Educators held a meeting to discuss its plans for Music Day, Nov. 13.
They will be inviting local high schools to meet music majors and answer any questions the students might have as well as showing them a few classes they may take in the future.
“So Music Day is just when we invite the high schools in Topeka … to come and check out what it looks like to be a music major or just like being involved in music because not everyone in our ensemble is a music major,” said Teagan Kimble, junior music education major.
The second part of the meeting was attended by three guests who had previously participated in NAfME. The atmosphere was very personal as they shared personal stories of what they had been through as educators and mentors.
By sharing their experiences, everyone in the room realized how much the educators put into the students and the whole learning process.
Sheri Cook-Cunningham, director of music education, shared how she felt about the meeting.
“They see me in a different light. I’m the director of music education, so I have them all in the classes, but then just sitting here and letting them run the meeting, I think it’s a really good kind of switch,” Cook-Cunningham said.
Lauren Wilson, sophomore music education major, shared how the meeting helped her learn more about her desired profession.
“It helps me to understand what I should expect. You get an idea of what it’s to be a teacher, but you don’t know the raw parts of it, so it helps to put a picture of what the real teacher’s life is,” Wilson said.
NAfME meets weekly on Thursdays in Garvey 220.
