On Wednesday, Nov. 6, Washburn University Symphony Orchestra held a Halloween-themed concert at White Concert Hall from 7:30-8:30 p.m. A total of six pieces of music were showcased during the concert.
The concert was directed and conducted by Raffaele Cipriano, director of orchestras and assistant professor of music. Halfway through the concert, they distributed free candy to the kids.
Weslie Evans, junior music education major and one of the bassists, enjoyed the challenge of performing in an orchestra.
“To stay focused while performing, I just try to keep my mindset in one space. I try to make sure my music stand is aligned with the conductor. I just keep everything in one space and I keep counting. I felt challenged while playing “Night on Bald Mountain,” because there are lots of different types of techniques and there are lots of exposed things where we have to really watch and count carefully,” Evans said.
Kade Nayers, one of the attendees, shared his thoughts regarding the concert.
“My partner is one of the performers so I am attending this concert. I used to play the instrument myself so I just really like to listen. It reminds me of when I used to play a lot. They perform really well,” Nayers said.
The people who were playing instruments in the concert were dressed in Halloween-themed clothes, creating a festive atmosphere. Their costumes added a unique touch to the performance by blending music with spooky creativity.
Morgan Carlson, freshman environmental biology major, attended this concert to encourage her friend.
“I liked ‘Last Summer.’ It’s really fun. The atmosphere here is very calming. My friend’s performance was really great,” Carlson said.
