On Thursday, Oct. 3, Washburn won its volleyball match-up against Pittsburg State University in Lee Arena. Around 600 spectators were there during the game to support their teams.

Sydney Conner, junior setter, played a key role in the team’s success.

“We came out really strong. We are really proud of the way that we played in the first, second and fourth sets. [We’re] glad to get another win under our belt against a good team, so yeah proud of the win,” Conner said.

Saajida Razick, freshman psychology major, found the game interesting.

“It’s really fun and exciting. It’s my first volleyball game and I was really excited to come. Washburn did their best and they won,” Razick said.

In the fourth set, both teams evenly matched, splitting the first 14 points, with neither side gaining an early advantage and both hitting below .200. Washburn maintained a slim two-point lead until a service error from Pittsburg State sparked a decisive 9-0 run for the Ichabods, culminating a kill from Stevenson that pushed their lead to 22-11. The Gorillas could not close the gap to fewer than eight points and ultimately lost the set after a rotation error allowed the final point to be scored.

Jasel Bailey, freshman exploratory major, shared her thoughts on the game.

“I am supporting Washburn and Washburn showed an impressive performance,” Bailey said.

Washburn stayed on the top for most of the match. The Ichabods’ offensive power was on full display with 63 kills. Additionally, they demonstrated their skill with six aces, eight blocks, 51 assists and 81 digs.
