On Sept. 25 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., the annual Majors and Minors Fair was held in the Memorial Union at Washburn University.
This event brought together dozens of different academic disciplines, from English to the Study Abroad Program, distributed across 47 tables. The goal of the fair was to help students choose a major that best suits their interests and career aspirations. For many Washburn students, this was a great opportunity to learn more about the different programs and majors.
Among the students who attended the event were two freshmen: Jullian Hasting, fine arts and graphic design major, and Jasper Bradley, philosophy and political science major. They shared their thoughts on the fair.
“I definitely think it can help people decide if they’re still questioning,” Hasting said.
Bradley shared his thoughts on whether choosing the right major and minor will help students achieve their career goals.
“I believe it can help, but I don’t think it’s dependent on the major,” Bradley said.
During the day, students had the chance not only to get acquainted with the presented disciplines but also to talk with their representatives. Each representative was happy to share some information about their programs, answer questions and offer useful advice to those who are just starting out in the academic world.
Louisa Schurig, director of Nursing Undergraduate Student Services, spoke about the benefits of minors for students.
“Minors supplement learning,” Schurig said. “They give students an additional field to have some expertise in, and you can incorporate that easily into a semester.”
The fair also created an atmosphere of friendliness and support, allowing everyone to feel confident and comfortable asking for help. Many students also did not hesitate to share experiences and give each other advice.
Ruby Johnson, a representative of the music and theater department, gave advice to all students who are still undecided about their major.
“Just try things out. The worst thing you can find out is that you don’t like it and then you try something else. But there’s nothing to lose in trying them out,” Johnson said.
In addition to all the departments, there were free drinks provided by Chartwells and popcorn for everyone to enjoy. The Majors and Minors Fair event made students’ day full of discoveries and useful information, which will certainly help many in determining their area of interest in studying.
