The Washburn women’s soccer team played a draw match against the University of Central Oklahoma at Yager Stadium Friday, Sept. 27.
Around 500 spectators were present at the stadium to support their team with lots of excitement and hope. The match started with high expectations, the teams were in equal hands with three shots in the first period where sophomore goalkeeper Hailey Beck made three saves for Ichabods.
The Ichabods recorded eight shots in the second period to the Bronchos’ three. Senior forward Khloe Schuckman recorded two shots on goal in the match and a header by Josie Boyle, senior defender, was blocked. The Ichabods took eleven shots as a team. The Bronchos were held to six shots, with four on target.
Junior forward Aubrey Tanksley, led Washburn with three shots and seven other Ichabods recorded at least one shot.
Jordan Tenpas, senior defender, felt the Ichabods played a pretty good game that was evenly matched.
“We had a couple of chances, but we just couldn’t get [the goals] and the [other] team made a bunch of saves. We put in a lot of things we did in practice,” Tenpas said.
Christy Meade, one of the spectators, expressed her view on the Ichabods’ performance.
“The Ichabods did better in the second half than the first. They played better than the opposing team. Overall, I liked the whole game,” Meade said.
Players’ families came to the game to cheer them on. Vicki Ellis came to watch her daughter play.
“I liked the whole match. It was very exciting. I thought it was better in the second half, but I really enjoyed it,” Ellis said.
The Ichabods will remain at home to face Newman University, Sept. 29. Information related to the Washburn women’s soccer team is available at wusports.com.
