Monday, Sept. 16 in Stoffer 007 in the Science Hall, the Biology Club held their second meeting to plan for future meetings and host elections for executive club positions.
After each person had an opportunity to speak on why they’d fill the role the best, heads were put down and it was time to vote. The votes are in and the new officers are as follows:
- President: August Wilson
- Vice President: Erica Guldner
- Secretary: Taryn Emery and Grace Wright
- Treasurer: Brooklyn Powell and Nick Johnston
- Historian: Lea Selenke and Carmen Villegas
August Wilson, senior biology major, was unanimously elected as president of the Biology Club. He has been involved for about three years and is excited to take on this new position.
“I’m really excited about it. I love the biology club. It’s been a really big source of community for me. I didn’t know basically anybody at Washburn before I joined, and that’s something I really value about the club, and I would like to cultivate that as a community aspect, and I would like to emphasize a little bit more mentorship of younger students,” Wilson said.
Despite their name, the biology club wants students to know that they are open to all majors. Dr. Benjamin Reed, faculty club advisor, mentioned how active the club is and the opportunities that stem from it.
“We do a lot of community services and a lot of events. So it’s a club where we are really active,” Reed said.
This club is dedicated to bringing students together through various events and activities. These events give a sense of community and engagement.
“We often will bring in guest speakers. We will prepare for a fundraiser event, upcoming or service event. We do things like documentary nights and trivia nights,” Reed said.
If you’re interested in joining the Biology club, join them for their next meeting Monday, Sept. 23 at 5 p.m. You can also check out their Instagram for more updates.
