WSGA had its first official cabinet meeting Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. All senate meetings take place in the Kansas Room, located on the upper level of the Memorial Union. After roll call, the committee members gave their cabinet reports.
Dante Jordan, campus and community director, is working on Can Emporia, an annual food drive against Emporia State University.
Kate Coulter, communications and marketing director, has been working on the new WSGA monthly newsletter called “WSGA Current.” It will be aimed at WSGA members and other people who want to learn more about the organization. Coulter has also been talking to Washburn’s marketing committee and Washburn students about the university rebrand.
Cameron Meseke, legislative director, announced that there are 12 freshmen running in the current WSGA elections and encouraged people to vote. Freshman senators will be inducted in the coming meetings.
Bella Wood, vice president of WSGA, has been tabling for the elections. She is also planning to conduct a Safety Walk, which is an annual walk review where members split into groups and conduct reports on campus safety and accessibility.
Several bills were passed, including a change to the voting process and the induction of seven new senators. The senators include: Kendall Abernathy, sophomore; Deondre Morris, junior; Meredith Ginn, sophomore; Kael Nadeau, senior; Ethan Clark, senior.
Other inductions included Alex Timm, junior, as allocations chairperson; Kirstyn Brown, junior, as campus and community affair chairperson; and Morris, junior, as diversity, equity and inclusion chairperson
Ottman spoke on the goals for the newly inducted senators as well as future senators.
“Senators for the first however much time [it takes], … their goal is to learn how the meetings run,” Ottman said.
Ottman also said that WSGA is looking forward to filling the current empty seats with more senators as the year continues.
Morris has been sworn in as chairperson of diversity, equity and inclusion. As the semester goes on, he wants to create more opportunities for international and STEM students.
“I’m an international student, and I would like to have more events for international students, for them to be more included, and also STEM majors too,” Morris said.
WSGA meetings are open to everyone, and students are highly encouraged to attend.
