It is that time of the school year when students attending Washburn University search for clubs to join, and the Spanish Club just made its fall 2024 debut by having its first meeting Wednesday, Aug. 28 in Morgan Hall 355.
The Spanish Club gives many students the opportunity to participate and be involved by allowing themselves to learn to speak Spanish.
“I think my main goal as the vice president is to give everyone the chance to participate by practicing their Spanish skills. They can make friends, get involved with other people taking Spanish classes and share experiences,” said Jesús Mendez, a sophomore Spanish major and Spanish Club vice president.
Carter Hiebert, a junior Spanish major, says that he joined the Spanish Club to practice the language so he can prepare for his big trip to Guatemala.
“I want to work on my actual conversational ability to speak Spanish. I get to go to Guatemala this Christmas for four weeks, and that should really help,” Hiebert said.
Students, like Lauren Frank, a senior Spanish major, said that the Spanish Club was able to have its first meeting this semester because she, along with more students, decided to revive the club.
“Me, along with a couple of other students, decided to revive the Spanish Club. Since the fall of 2020, there weren’t a lot of clubs on campus, and so we really thought that it would be a great place to practice our Spanish and get other students involved,” Frank said.
The Spanish Club is not just open to people working towards a minor or major, but to anyone who wants to increase their ability to speak Spanish.
