On Wednesday, Sept. 20, the Washburn Student Government Association held its fourth meeting of the semester. Vice president, Tevin Asamoah, led the meeting in president Antonio Martinez’s absence.
During the meeting, five new first-year senators, freshmen Rene Cabrea, Kate Coulter, Nick Lloyd, Taylor Redington and Maggie Bowrell, were sworn into office.
“I’m really excited to see a bunch of new faces. Extremely happy to see when we have a lot of people in the gallery. And I’m very happy and proud of our teacher staff for bringing in five new senators with first year elections,” Asamoah said.
Progress for homecoming events are going smoothly. The homecoming organizers are currently trying to find volunteers to help work the events.
A contest is being held on Instagram where the organization that gets the most likes on their homecoming posts will get priority seating at Yell Like Hell.
“With organizations on campus, if you have any sort of social media, there is a chance to win priority seating, which is the first two to three rows in the middle of Yell Like Hell. It is for two weeks where you can post an Instagram reel just a regular picture of you doing something acknowledging homecoming, with the tag ‘WUontop’,” said Liz Duvall, homecoming chair.
Spirit week is planned in collaboration between WSGA, and the Homecoming team. It will be on the week before Halloween Oct. 23-27. The days will include, teacher lookalike Monday, wear anything but a backpack Tuesday, western Wednesday, wear Washburn Thursday and costume Friday.
“Spirit week is a way to get more participation from our students, and showing that it is actually homecoming week itself,” Duvall said.
The WSGA Standing Rules of the senate, are the rules that determine how the senate operates, and are required to be redrafted each school year. The redraft was proposed to the senate and the bill was accepted.
The rules were largely the same from last year, with a few changes. The main change is a decrease in the public form rules, they were decreased to 15 minutes. Also, the debate time was increased to 20 minutes, from the previous 15 minutes, as debates would often go over the time period and require an extension.
The next WSGA meeting will be Oct. 4, all students are welcome.
