Washburn University offers various job opportunities for those looking to work. From administrative positions, faculty roles and even student office assistants, the campus is always looking to fill positions.

As in any job industry, the turnover ebbs and flows. Washburn has employees that have been with the university since the arrival of current president Jerry Farleely while on the other hand, students of Washburn often decide to come back as an employee.

Ellie Walker, a Washburn graduate, decided to return to Washburn as its public relations specialist.

“I started at Washburn Tech in 2016 and I started at the university in 2017 and graduated in 2021,” Walker said. “It really feels like home.”

Being familiar with campus and having the right degree, Walker took her shot at the application.

“I saw they had a PR position and I was thinking it was a good start because it is already like home to me,” Walker said.

Some students tend to start out their careers as employees of Washburn because the school is willing and allows opportunities of their dedication and willingness to let them learn.

“This is a really good place to work, I feel like there are so many good opportunities here,” Walker said. “The benefits are good and I love being surrounded by the people.”

Though students have the opportunity to find a place at Washburn, those looking to come back to the midwest can find the campus enthralling.

“I am from Florida and had never been to the midwest,” said Morganne Lander, Washburn’s social media specialist.

Getting her master’s degree at Missouri State introduced Lander to life living in the midwest. and living in the midwest changed never coming to the midwest for Lander.

She moved to Texas, but she started to miss the midwest and started the job hunt.

“I started researching jobs in the midwest and Washburn popped up,” Lander said. “I came and visited and I interviewed, I thought that it was a really cool place and that the campus was amazing.”

Though Lander is not originally from Washburn, she has fallen in love with her job in the six months she has worked on campus.

“I like the variety, there is a lot of creativity and that is something I am really passionate about,” Lander said.

Different people come to work at Washburn for different reasons, but the main one is that it feels familiar.

Both Walker and Lander did not hesitate to take their positions at Washburn, showcasingwhich shows that the familiar feeling of campus has helped in making potential employees feel welcomed and accepted long before they apply or take on a position at Washburn.
