Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo: A Star Wars Story

There is little to criticize about the new star wars film Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Years before joining The Rebellion, a smuggler given the name Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) hopes to fly his own ship and make a new life for himself. As the story progresses, Han becomes acquainted with a band of outlaws in search for valuable but unstable starship fuel. This group seeks to make amends with a fierce crime lord, Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany). Because of this heist, Solo is introduced to his future co-pilot and best friend, Chewbacca, along with fellow smuggler and notorious gambler, Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover).

Unlike Episode 8: The Last Jedi, the plot of Solo is concise and easy to follow. Each character serves a purpose. Director Ron Howard spoke about the cast, “All these characters and relationships matter and really drive things. They inform of the personality and psychology of this young Han Solo and shape him into the hero we all know and love.” Howard made his movie as an individual entity and made it work by supporting the movie with the concepts of the pre-existing star wars universe. Even if we didn’t know any of these characters from earlier movies, it would have been quality entertainment, lacking only some fun inside humor.

Most of this movie I really enjoyed. There were some things however that made me question if Howard was serious about making the movie or just having fun mixing up an already established story. The relationship between Solo and Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke) seemed forced, unnecessary and somehow ended up being vital to the existence of The Rebellion, but we can just ignore that. Another thing worth mentioning is the disturbing relationship between Lando Calrissian and L3 (Phoebe Waller-Bridge). It was just fine to start out, but the more she spoke about her intimate relationship with Lando, the more I was ready to see her scrapped in Raxus.

I would not go into the theater expecting to walk out a new person. Watch Solo for the entertainment and fun story that it is and you will absolutely enjoy it.

I give Solo: A Star Wars Story 8/10
