Delta Gamma serves their philanthropy, service for sight
Delta Gamma, one of three sororities on Washburn campus, had their philanthropy week events from Monday, Oct. 4, to Thursday Oct. 7, 2021. Delta Gamma was hosting events in support of their philanthropy, Service for Sight.
Vice President of the Delta Gamma, Lauryn Massey, a junior year mass media major, planned the events: a carwash in the front drive of the Delta Gamma house on Monday, Chipotle Night on Tuesday, a cookout on Wednesday , and “Pie a DG” on campus on Thursday.
Massey explained her favorite events from this past week and the past few years.
“I really liked the carwash we just did on Monday… and then last year, we did dunk a DG, where we had a dunk tank and that was super fun as well. This week, we’re doing pie a DG, so similar concept, everyone always loves getting pied and whipped cream in the face.” said Massey.
From the event, Service for Sight, Delta Gamma supports the blind and visually impaired community. At a national level, Delta Gamma has founded five schools for children with visual impairments. Massey shared that Delta Gamma at Washburn will be donating 50% of their fundraising to those five schools, and the other half will be going to the Kansas State school for the blind.
President of Delta Gamma, Baylee Wolf, senior psychology major at Washburn, shared that there are several other ways that they help the visually impaired. Along with the donations to the Delta Gamma founded schools and Kansas State School for the blind, in the past they have collected old prescription glasses as well as spread awareness about the app, be my eyes. The purpose of the app is to pair a visually impaired person with a sighted volunteer through live video call so that the volunteer can help guide the visually impaired individual.
“We have multiple philanthropy weeks… So, be on the lookout for the spring one… Join us in promoting [our events], come to our events. Even if it’s just like, you come, drop off some money for [our] philanthropy and stuff, that still gets donated,” said Wolf.
Massey explained that most of their promotion is on Instagram, where they can be found under the username @deltagammawu for event promotion, information on Delta Gamma, and a glimpse into the Delta Gamma life.
