On Monday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m., there will be a public lecture at Washburn in the Memorial Union, Washburn rooms A and B. There will be time to talk with Dr. Watson before her lecture, and time afterwards as well. There will be several faculty members there to talk with. 

Dr. Dyan Watson will be visiting, who is a former high school social studies teacher, and is now an associate professor at the Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling in Portland, Oregon. She is the co-editor of “Teaching for Black Lives,” “Rhythm and Resistance” and “Rethinking Elementary Education.” She is also the author of “Letter from a Black mom to her son.”

Her lecture is titled “Creating Culturally Responsive Classrooms”. It will be open and free to the public, and will discuss the messages educators send to students and families about race and culture as well as how to work on sending the ‘right’ message to them. Along with that, one of the messages that is being told by others is the fact that there needs to be more relevant work efforts needing to be done for these students, and there are so many different students that need help and not enough people who care.
