Car catches fire in sorority
January 10, 2007
A car caught on fire in the Alpha Phi parking lot, 1839 SW Jewell, on Washburn campus around 3 p.m Friday, Jan. 27.
Members of the Alpha Phi sorority saw the car smoking and called 911. They tried to extinguish the fire with a home fire extinguisher while waiting for the fire department to arrive. The car had sat unused for about 30 minutes before anyone noticed the smoke. Lauren Albin, member of Alpha Phi and owner of the car, couldn’t be reached for comment.
Both the Washburn Police Department and Topeka Fire Department responded to the emergency call. Meanwhile, the front portion of the car had burst into flames. The firefighters extinguished the fire in a matter of minutes. No one was hurt in the fire.
The cause of the fire has not been released but it most likely originated from the engine. Alpha Phi members said that Albin had been having various troubles with her car for awhile, including trouble with it starting.
