The Washburn baseball team has gotten into the swing of things recently, winning six of its last eight games.

The Ichabods traveled to Pittsburg last weekend, splitting a pair of games with the Pittsburg State Gorillas. Washburn lost the first game 9-3, and won the second game 15-8. Washburn is now 11-10 overall and 5-5 in the MIAA conference.

“We started the year a little shaky after playing some really good teams,” said Randy Wild, senior pitcher. “We had some [Division I] teams on the schedule, so I think playing those teams prepared us for who we are playing now. Central Missouri is a top 10 team in the nation, we got a big win against them which gave us a lot of momentum going into last weekend. I think we’re looking pretty good right now.”

Washburn has shown flashes this season, putting up big offensive numbers. Earlier in the year the Ichabods defeated Minnesota Crookston 29-1, and then defeated Bemidji State 20-6 two days later.

Wes Joy, freshman second basemen, has been one of the bigger surprises on the team. Joy, who is from Burlington, is hitting .412 and has started every game this season.

“To this point, I’ve been real pleased with our pitching,” said Steve Anson, Washburn head baseball coach. “Our starting pitching especially, they’ve done an outstanding job. Throughout the 19 games we’ve played, the defense has been good for the most part. If you look at our fielding percentage, it’s not very good, but it’s really because of three games where we made maybe four, five, six errors in the game. You take those out of there and we’ve had some pretty good defensive efforts.”
