Martin Tanner Productions will present a reading of “Visions of Right” by award-winning Topeka playwright, Marcia Cebulska, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29 at Washburn’s Mabee Library. Admission is free and no reservation is required.

“Visions of Right” is an investigation of prejudice, extremism and personal responsibility in contemporary American society. Four characters confront each other and themselves when a hate-mongering preacher launches an attack on artists, Jews and gays. Cebulska wrote the script in response to the controversial ministry of the Westboro Baptist Church.

“Visions of Right” was given a reading in Topeka several years ago at Temple Beth Shalom and went on to receive national awards including the Dorothy Silver Award and the Stage Three Festival of New Plays Award.

Cebulska is best known to Topeka audiences for her play “Now Let Me Fly,” commissioned for the national celebration of 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education case.

She is an internationally produced writer whose plays also include “Touched,” commissioned by the William Inge Theatre Festival, and “Florida,” chosen for development by the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference and the Sundance Playwrights Lab.

Martin Tanner Productions is a company of professional actors based in Kansas City. The cast includes Jen Mays, Paul E. Orwick, Charles Fugate and Matt Rapport, all members of Actors Equity. The reading is directed by Diane Bulan.

The Topeka performance is sponsored by the Center for Kansas Studies, The Washburn history department and the Gay-Straight Legal Alliance of Washburn University School of Law.
