The Topeka RoadRunners couldn’t quite recover after an early two goal deficit.

Despite outshooting the St. Louis Bandits 21-10 over the final two periods, Topeka wound up one goal shy, falling 3-2 to the Bandits on Saturday night at the Hardee’s Iceplex in Chesterfield, Mo.

Following a 5-2 RoadRunner victory Friday, Tucker Long made sure Topeka (15-7-2) wouldn’t have the lead early, scoring just 1:09 into the first period. Brad Smith followed with a goal at 10:11 to give St. Louis (20-8-3) a two goal advantage. After one period, shots were even at 11.

Topeka’s Jordan Davis fired a puck past Bandit goalie Matt Green 15 seconds into the second frame to bring Topeka within one goal. However, at 8:57, Chris Ciotti pushed the lead back to two goals, getting a shot past Rasmus Tirronen. Kyle Sharkey struck back at 11:15 to cut the lead to 3-2.

But a 10-4 shot advantage couldn’t save Topeka in the third period, as they split the series with the Bandits. Michael Hill, Justin Hussar, and Davis have combined for 45 of the RoadRunners’ 88 goals on the season.

Topeka remains in third place in the North American Hockey League South Division and play the division leading Texas Tornado next weekend in Frisco, Tex. before returning home for a four game homestand.
