The Washburn Art Team of United Potters (WATUP) held a holiday ceramics sale Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 inside the main lobby in the Memorial Union. Pieces were priced anywhere from as little as $2 up to $45.

Their opening night was from 5 to 8 Tuesday evening, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday. Tony Hurt, a Washburn Student and WATUP member for his first year, was very impressed with their first night of sales.

Most of the ceramics sold were made by students, as well as a few faculty pieces.

“Each piece is individual and puts creativity into each one,” said Hurt. “Potters have a long and interesting history, and were very renown in the community before the Industrial Age.”

Items on display included pitchers, vases, coffee cups, canister sets, bowls, and decorative pieces. Money made from the sale helps to bring in guest ceramic artists and future trips to ceramic sponsors. WATUP sponsors two ceramic sales a year, one in the fall and one in the spring. Ceramics make great gifts for any special occasion, whether it is for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or Mother’s Day.

One does not have to be an Art Major to join WATUP. “Open membership is welcome,” said WATUP’s president, Kris Roberts. This is Roberts’ second year, and is an Art major.

WATUP also have Free Throwing nights, and had their first Halloween Throwing Party this year, and it was a tremendous success. There were over 85 people in attendance, including children. It makes a great family activity, and got to take their creations home. “It was a lot of work for us, but fun for everyone,” said Hurt.
