At 5 p.m. Monday Oct. 28, the Family Service and Guidance Center hosted their annual trunk or treat event for the kids in the center. For years Washburn sorority Phi Theta Kappa Alumni of Washburn has reached out and partnered with the Family and Service Guidance Center. They give children an opportunity to go trick or treating to break the 2-5 routine the kids are used to. Due to the unpredictable weather, the event was moved to the gym inside of the building.

“We really just wanted to have a fun, safe trick or treating event for our kiddos in the event that they’re not able to go out on Halloween,” said Pam Evans, the director of marketing and development for Family Services. 

This is the main volunteer opportunity for PT KAW, and they make sure to make the most of it, for themselves and the children.

“It is good for us as young college students to be a part of the community,” said Emily Jardon, senior mass media major. 

There were many organizations from the community and Washburn University including PT KAW, Criminal Justice Association, Soccer Club, the men’s rugby team, Student Media, Black Student Union, Psychology Club and the Social Work Association. Many of the volunteers gave up some of their evening to give this experience to these kids.

“We are doing it because we want to be involved in the community and to help the kids get involved in the community.” said Sam Merutka, a junior political science major and player on the men’s rugby team.

Sunshine or snow, when it comes to trunk or treating, nothing can stop the true happiness that comes from the kids of FSGC. All of the organizations agreed that they are trying to spread happiness through this event. The reactions from everyone reflect just that. The kids, staff and volunteers all seemed to enjoy their time at the trunk or treat, creating another successful Halloween season.
