Breanna Lewis became the 15th member of Washburn’s 1,000 kill club as she totaled 13 in a 25-13, 25-13, 25-22 sweep over Southwest Baptist Friday night in Lee Arena.
No. 3 Washburn won its 20th straight match overall, 23rd straight in the MIAA and 37th straight in Lee Arena. The Lady Blues (27-1, 14-0 MIAA) remained the only unbeaten team in the MIAA. They will continue their three-match home stand Saturday at 2 p.m. against Pittsburg State with just one regular season home match remaining after that.
Lewis hit .647 in the match with 13 kills and two errors. She now has 1,004 kills and is 15th in Washburn career history. With a .322 attack percentage, she is on pace to finish as one of only three Lady Blues to hit better than .300 in their career.
Lewis entered the match needing nine kills to get 1,000. She had Washburn’s first three kills in the match and four total in the first set. She then had three early kills in the second set and her second kill in the third set got her to the milestone. She finished with six kills in the final set including the match winner.
Marissa Cox came off the bench for seven kills and a team-high five blocks that tied a career high. Hillary Hughes had eight kills.
The Lady Blues won easily in the first two sets, hitting .250 in the opener and .500 in the second set. The Bearcats hit -.100 and .156, respectively, in those sets. Washburn hit .320 in the whole match and SBU had a .039 attack percentage.
Amanda Guess led Washburn with 20 assists and three aces. Gracie Petersen had 17 assists.
The Bearcats tried to make the third set interesting. Washburn pulled to an early 10-5 lead but SBU scored six of the next seven points to tie the match at 11. The Bearcats led briefly at 13-12 and kept the set close the rest of the way. Washburn used a 3-0 run to go up 22-18 and then later got to match point on an SBU service error. Lewis’ 1,004th kill ended the match.
Carrie Johnson and Kylie Heim led the Bearcats with six kills each.
Washburn swept its fifth straight opponent a beat SBU for the 25th straight time.
