August 11, 2013
Topeka, Kan. – Washburn Tech is adding more students and services in the 2013-2014 school year. Preliminary numbers indicate a 20 percent increase in enrollment for the upcoming semester, which begins on Monday, August 12th.
A ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Washburn Tech Bookstore is also scheduled Monday, August 12th, at 2:00 p.m. on the main campus at 5724 SW Huntoon St. It will offer books, supplies and school apparel sporting the logos of both Washburn University and Washburn Tech.
“Our growth, both in students and services, is a due to the commitment we receive from our faculty and staff, Washburn University and the state,” said Clark Coco, dean, Washburn Tech. “We credit a lot of our success to Senate Bill 155 and the launch of Governor Brownback’s initiative to build a certified, highly qualified workforce for business and industry in Kansas.”
Senate Bill 155, passed in May of 2012, provides all Kansas high school students free tuition for technical education courses taken at Kansas technical and community colleges. It also establishes an incentive program for school districts to get students involved in career and technical education prior to graduating from high school.
