The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald is an influential Scottish children’s fantasy novel from 1872. Princess Irene is given a magical ring. Curdie is a boy who works in the mines. The goblins who live underground intend to kidnap Irene and marry her off to the goblin prince. The story begins as a normal fairytale but becomes stranger. It’s notable for bravery and symbolism.
