Share Your Voice

Student Media wants to hear from you! We are accepting a wide variety of personal work from Washburn students to be published on our website so that it can be shared with the campus community. Students can submit work in the form of Student Voices, Letters to the Editor and a Personal Column. If you’re proud of something you made for a class or on your own time, submit it here and it will be featured on our website.

Student Voices

Do not attack/tear down any Washburn students, staff, faculty, student organizations, etc. 2. Do not submit content that is oppressing, discriminating or offensive. 3. Check your facts. Make sure that your content is accurate if it is taking a stance on an issue. 4. Be timely with your content. If it is related to an event that is happening now then we will try to publish your work as soon as possible. 5. Proofread your content before submission. Student Media will edit your work if need be. *Student Media reserves the right to post or not post any content that is submitted to the organization*

Letters to the Editor

Write a letter to the editor in response to something you have read or wish you had read on our website or in our newspaper. This is perhaps the easiest way to get your voice heard. Policy Rules: No inflammatory language, no personal attacks against students, professors or staff and your writing must be comprehensible. Each letter to the editor must have the writer’s real name attached to it along with a valid Washburn email address. Letters may be edited for length, grammar and accuracy. The Review staff will send all letter writers an email to confirm the identify of each letter writer. Remember to keep your letter interesting/engaging, concise, accurate and clear. Letters are typically less than 250 words and may be edited for length, grammar and accuracy.

Student Voices

This is another way to contribute to Student Media and it allows more creativity. Maybe you’ve created something in a class you’re especially proud of such as an essay, a drawing, a video, a poem, a short story, a podcast or a photo or series of photos. Student Media is looking for pieces that say something personal about you, something that reveals some vulnerability. Students are incredibly complex individuals, and we’re not asking you to share your most intimate or private pieces of yourselves. There are many ways to show vulnerability, and we hope that this section can help us all celebrate your unique gifts and abilities. We do ask that you limit work in this category to about 10 minutes, meaning that is how long the average reader would have to set aside to read/watch/listen or experience your work.

Opinion Column

Next, you may decide to write one personal column for the newspaper or perhaps you would like to pitch a series of columns that you will write for Student Media. Guest columnists are not paid staff members, but students interested in writing at least one column per week of the semester are eligible to receive freelance pay after going through the necessary steps to become eligible for payroll. Personal columns will be printed along with your real name and photo and should be at least 300 words each.
