The Mulvane Art Museum, located on the Washburn University campus, is preparing to present this summer’s series of Razzle Dazzle art classes that will give individuals of all ages the opportunity to engage in a variety of art forms. These classes will feature art forms ranging from painting to jewelry making to working with ceramics.

The Razzle Dazzle classes and workshops will be taught by local artists, art teachers, art education students, and education students or licensed teachers that share a passion for art.

Thomas Anderson, a worker in the ArtLab at the Mulvane Art Museum, is a middle school education major with an emphasis in English who shares a strong passion and dedication for art.

Anderson will be teaching “The Art of Sports” and “Dramatic Dimensions: From 2D to 3D” in the first session of Razzle Dazzle classes.

The Razzle Dazzle classes will accommodate an assortment of schedules, skills, pastimes and age groups, and will give each participant a hands-on experience.

“This cross-curriculum will cover a variety of media, explore a variety of cultures and investigate many art forms and meanings,” said Kandis Barker, curator of education at the Mulvane Art Museum.

The three class sessions held over a two-month period will start on June 15. Each session will include a morning and afternoon option. The morning workshops will last from 10 a.m. to noon while the afternoon workshops will go from 1-3 p.m.

Several of the classes will directly tie to exhibitions from the Mulvane Art Museum, such as “Accidental Mysteries,” “Mulvane’s Animal Farm: Selections from the Permanent Collection” and “ragaZagar: Isaiah Zagar mosaics.”

Aside from the class sessions, there will be workshops on Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. and classes on Saturdays from 1-3 p.m.

The Mulvane will offer ArtLab Family Days, a familial art experience, from 1-4 p.m. on June 20 and Aug. 15. The first family day will allow participants to create art inspired by the summer solstice. The second family day, which occurs on Aug. 15, will give families the chance to use the medium of art to celebrate the beginning of another school year.

All classes and workshops will be taught in the basement of the Mulvane, which provides classrooms containing the resources for clay working, drawing and painting. In addition, there are also two multipurpose classrooms, the ArtLab and a resource library.

“These are phenomenal classes that allow other areas and subjects of art to be taught to kids, teens and adults,” said Christian Sauerman, an ArtLab assistant.

Thanks to the donors of the Mulvane Art Museum, there will be scholarships available for those in need of financial assistance.

Costs related to specific classes and workshops are included with the course descriptions. All Washburn University students, faculty and staff will receive the Friends Member discount for the classes.

Registration for the Razzle Dazzle summer classes is currently available and must be submitted before noon Thursday, June 11. Late enrollment for a class will be allowed at the risk of that class being full or cancelled due to low enrollment.

Forms for registration can be mailed, phoned in, faxed or delivered in person to the Mulvane Art Museum. Payment options for registration include cash, check, or MasterCard, Visa or Discover credit cards.

“There is such a huge range of diversity of people that come in and want to learn art, so this is a perfect experience for anyone,” Sauerman said.

The Mulvane Art Museum is free to students, faculty and the general public, with donations encouraged.
