Skating, food and games are all part of the roller derby bout being held at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at Sk8away in Topeka.

Doors open at 5:15 p.m. and adult tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Children get in for $6.

The Crushers will go verse the Derby Dames in competition.

Sk8away proudly advertises and hosts Topeka’s two roller derby teams – The Capital City Crushers and The Chick Whips. The Crushers are Topeka’s Women’s team and the Chick Whips are Topeka’s junior derby team, including girls from 8 to 17. Both teams encourage newcomers to join.

“Roller derbies are an interesting and unique sport,” said Sara Steele, head coach of The Crushers. “Players get involved with the crowd and try to be approachable and interactive.”

Steele said the girls and women playing the sport acquire skills through teamwork and come out to have a good time. If they’re not having a good time, they’re doing it wrong. The same goes for the crowd.

“There are many misconceptions about roller derbies”, said Melissa Kershner, marketing director for Sk8away. “They are actually very family friendly. It’s a unique event, and is worthwhile to see our diverse team.”

Kershner said the team comes from all walks of life, different ages and circumstances, but still comes to support each other and have fun.

“If you want to come out and have a good time, we have a nice community for you to be a part of,” Steele said.
